Peewee’s Capture WOBA Championship

Timely hitting, solid defence & lots of good pitching was the perfect receipt for the Listowel Peewee’s to prove victorious this past weekend. The young Legionaries beat Lucan in the final 10-3 to capture the title.

In the final the local lads were looking to avenge an earlier loss to Lucan. The game was close until the 4th inning when Listowel  scored 4 times to open up a 5 run lead. That would be more than enough run support for Will Calder as he pitched a complete game scattering 4 hits while striking out 5.

The weekend started on Friday night with a game versus Kincardine. This game was decided early as the Legionaries scored the maximum 6 runs in the first 3 innings and Calder proved too much for the Cardinals on route to an 18-0 victory. Game 2 was on Saturday morning against Owen Sound with Brett MacLeod getting the start. He kept their hitters off balance while his team’s offense continued from where it let off the night before... scoring runs. When the time expired Listowel won 13-1. Game 3 just a few hours later Listowel would face Exeter in the battle of the 2 undefeated teams. The same story as the previous 2 games would continue to prevail, this time it would be Michael Uptigrove’s turn on the mound as he worked methodically through a good hitting Exeter line-up. The Legionaries offense continued to get timely hits which pushed runs across in most innings. Again when the time expired the local lads would be on top 11-5. The potential semi-final game would see the local lads face the first place team from Lucan. This was a great game featuring many great hits and defensive plays. Luc Jamieson & Reid Gooding pitched well working hard to keep the strong Lucan team at bay. The game would come down to the last inning were Listowel would score 3 times to tie the game only to have Lucan push a run across in the bottom of the inning thus winning 12-11.

With the Listowel loss their would be 3 teams left each with a loss and a bye draw would determine that Listowel would have to play Clinton with the winner facing Lucan in the final. The Sunday morning game wasn't too early for the local lads as they continued the trend from the previous day. Strong pitching from Uptigrove & MacLeod would hold Clinton at bay while the offense would continue to click. In the end the Legionaires would prove victorious 11-3 setting up the final rematch against Lucan.

With 6 games over 3 days naturally there were many players contributing to the overall team success by having good at bats or making nice defensive plays. But as the coach I’d like to thank all the players for their selfless attitude towards playing time. With 15 players and time shortened games it's really tough to get players lots of playing time & at bats but to their credit every one of them were great about the whole situation.

Next up for the peewee’s is the OBA Championships being held in Listowel on the Labour day weekend.
