Listowel literally owned the podium in the peewee girls’ division of the Intercounty Softball Association in 2017.
Listowel #2 claimed the ISA regional championship on Sept. 10 at John Bell North, edging Listowel #1 4-2 in extra innings in a defensive gem worthy of a league finale. Listowel #3 finished third overall in the peewee girls’ bracket.
In Sunday’s final, Listowel #2 pitcher Brynn Ament threw a complete game, 13-strikeout performance to lead her squad to the win. The game remained scoreless until the top of the fifth inning, when #2’s Kaitlyn Donkersgoed plated a run with a RBI single. Listowel #1 struck back in the home half of the frame, after Vanessa Neves got aboard and stole second, third and home to tie the game at 1-1.
The game remained tied beyond the seventh and required an extra frame to settle the title. Starting with a base runner on second, Donkersgoed hit another RBI single in the top of the eighth and Listowel #2 scored twice more on a fielder’s choice and an RBI double for a 4-1 advantage.
Listowel #1 got one back in the bottom of the eighth when Neves was again able to steal home, but Ament would strike out the side for a 4-2 final.
