Peewees Compete in Kincardine Tourny

The Peewee Legionaries took part in their first tournament of the year & despite losing all 3 games they did come away with a better understanding of the areas that need improvements.

Game 1 pitted the young team up against the host Kincardine Cardinals. Maybe it was some jitters but the bats & pitching where a little suspect over the course of this game. The usually dependable Zac Boertien got the start and struggled to consistently find the strike zone, while the bats were unusually silent, combined with a few errors and you have the recipe for a 9-5 loss. Garnering hits for the Listowel squad were Ethan Cook, Travis Bannerman & Owen Day, while Boertien & Day combined to allow 5 hits, & 7 walks while striking out 4.

Game 2 was against the Woodstock Wranglers, and this game featured better pitching, better hitting but a lot of errors. Brandon Wall started for the Legionaries and pitched well but unfortunately his defense let him down committing 3 1st inning errors which allowed 5 runs to cross the plate. Riley Kuepfer & Cook would come in relief but the errors would continue as the team finished with a total of 7 errors. The Wall/Kuepfer/Cook pitching line was respectable allowing 10 hits, 4 walks & striking out 9. Providing the offense in the 12-7 loss was Cook (with 3 hits), Alex Mock & Darren Evans (2 hits each), and Blair Johnson, Day, Kuepfer, Boertien & Wall each collecting 1 hit.

Despite the 2 losses the local lads still had a chance to advance if they could win their 3rd game against the Annette A’s , and get some help. Johnson would get the start for this game which would again take on a similar pattern. Poor defense and some suspect pitching was all the opportunity the A’s required scoring 5 1st inning runs. To Listowel’s credit they didn’t quit and closed the gap to 3 but another shaky last inning blow the game wide open handing the Legionaries the 14-6 loss. The pitching line for Johnson/ Cook/ Day was they allowed 6 hits, 7 walks and struck out none. The offense was led by Johnson, Bannerman, Kuepfer & Mock with 2 hit apiece while Boertien chipped in with 1 hit.

The team has just over a month before their next tournament (in Mitchell) giving them lots of opportunity to improve. The coaching staff believes that if the work ethic is there the results in Mitchell will be much better.
